Dimmable lamps aren't bright

Hey there,

Whoever designed the dimmable lamps in our home got it all wrong — at least for our needs. Here’s how lamps can teach you how to find your niche on social media.

One thing you should know

The lamps in my home have three brightness settings that go from the dimmest to the brightest. And that’s a problem.

I bet the designers thought starting with the brightest setting would be too much for someone just waking up. And sure, some people like it that way.

But here’s the thing: people don’t exclusively use their lamps in the morning.

If you have small kids like I do, you’re getting them to sleep with the lamp on the dimmest setting. And when you turn it off, you have to click through all the brightness levels, filling the room with more and more light until it finally goes dark.

It's not helpful when trying to keep children asleep in their beds.

I’d gladly pay for a lamp that starts on the brightest setting. And if someone intelligently marketed a lamp that dimmed in the order I wanted, I guarantee thousands of other parents would also pay.

You know what the crazy thing is? We have many dimmable lamps in our house, all from different manufacturers. And they all dim in the same order.

If there was a forward-thinking lamp manufacturer who didn’t think the conventional wisdom was very wise, they just might have an opportunity to sell some lamps.

One thing you should do

This gap between what the experts think is best and what customers truly need is where your social media content can thrive.

So, for this week’s video, talk about something in your industry that people get wrong. Pick a “commonly held truth” you don’t believe is true, and share your take. Challenge how people think!

Here are some hooks to get you started:

  1. "Want to know something crazy? Most people are wrong about _______ [common misconception]."

  2. "Are you still _______ [doing outdated practice]? It’s time to stop."

  3. "Calling all _______ [specific group]! Resist the urge to  _______ [action]. Here’s why."

  4. "Most people are failing at _______ [task]. Here’s what they don’t know."

  5. "Ever wonder why _______ [conventional advice] isn’t working for you? Here’s the real reason."

  6. "Before you do _______ [task], do this _______ [action] instead. Here’s why."

  7. "Doing _______ [action] is hurting your  _______ [goal]. Here’s what to do instead."

  8. "Here’s  _______ [industry] gets wrong about  _______ [topic] ."

What problem are you facing with your social media? Just hit reply and let me know.

Until next time,
